Some of my earliest memories are of drawing. As a boy, I watched the passing landscape as we traveled the world, and I imagined fantastic things. The word “unconventional” has been used to describe my path to a career in design. Whatever the intent of the comment, I take it as a compliment on creative thinking. Whether it’s my career as an interior/landscape designer or my passion for illustration, an artistic eye, design principles, and an unorthodox approach are the keys to my success. After all the projects over the years, the constant has been my unrelenting imagination. The nagging little voice that propels me to seek new and unique work. Every day, even after the long ones, you’ll find me drawing a page for a comic, designing a new character, writing a short story, painting, or thinking up a new way to redesign my kitchen. Channeling that drive into building something that I am proud of and something for my family is incredibly exciting and equally terrifying. It brings me so much joy to have the opportunity to share art with others. Thank you for taking the time to view it. "You can't use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have." What does VOTD mean? The acronym stands for Variations Of The Dark. Though my personal art has been described as “dark” in nature and /or themes, that is not the inspiration for the name. Variations of dark is a term broadly used by artists in reference to values and tones. The range between the darkest and lightest value scale. The connection to art and illustration is an obvious association, but there is a deeper, personal meaning for me. In stirring conversations ranging from subjective to those bordering on the philosophical, I have repeated some variation of the same statement countless times: “Very few things are black and white in a vast sea of grey. We all live in the grey.” I repeat it as a way to check myself more so than as a statement to others. We are all guilty of making broad sweeping assumptions without considering the implications, and I would bet that few of us reflect on the consequences of such generalities. Remembering to practice empathy is essential for growth, peace, and progress for the individual and community alike. At least, in my humble opinion. Empathy begets compassion, compassion begets kindness, and kindness is just basic decency. VOTD represents my love of art, culture, and community. A reminder to practice the golden rule.
